This week, we started looking what students we would use for our sample population. We started by writing a letter to our respective principals stating that we would keep all information confidential and only use it for the purpose of the research inquiry. After this, my wife looked over a list of at risk/ECD 7th and 8th grade students on her campus and I looked a list of at risk/ECD 9th and 10th grade students. So far, we have cut the list down to students who qualify under both ECD and At Risk. Our next step is going to be to find the number of referrals for each of these students from last year and this year, as well as the number of days spent in ISS and AEP. This will help us to find our target population. After we gather all of this information, we are going to try to form an action committee to help us select the students who will most benefit from alternative discipline. We believe that we can gain more teacher buy in by gaining their perspective on which students they are willing to work with on different discipline procedures besides placement in ISS. We understand that without teacher buy in this research inquiry will be less effective. Hopefully, with this plan of attack, we will be able to come up with a good size target population to track for the remainder of this year and the fall of next year. We will also look to our action committee to help us brainstorm ideas of alternative discipline.
